INNOVATE: Experiments: learning
and expanding in Singapore

After hearing of some rich context, we move
onto a session that can give us some insight
into an astonishing experimental programme
taking place in Singapore. Expanding the
notion of what the public library can be – a
marketplace of ideas – the social network of
Public Good. Gene Tan is breaking boundaries
in experimentation in the library space.
“Gene was formerly the Director of the
National Library Singapore, the President of
the Library Association of Singapore before
returning as the Assistant Chief Executive of
the National Library Board (NLB) after a stint
work on national projects with the Prime
Minister’s Office. These projects include The
Future of Us, the capstone event of
Singapore’s celebrations of its 50th year of
independence, as well as The Singapore
Bicentennial, a reflection on a key point in
Singapore’s history in 1819 with the arrival of
the British. The latter broke attendance
records for its flagship event, The Bicentennial
Experience, which chronicled Singapore’s
700-year history. Gene was also the creator of
The Singapore Memory Project, a whole-ofnation
movement to document personal
memories.
He is currently leading LAB25 – a series of
experiments on all aspects of the NLB’s
business in the public libraries, National
Library and National Archives.”

building
In this final Lighthouse session we turn the
discussion to you – to reflect on the previous
sessions and to take time to share our
thoughts and inspiration for the next steps of
building the PL2030 Library forums for
democracy project.
We can update you on concrete actions – hear
from the libraries in the ECF library challenge,
and those participating in the Finnish Pilots.
Consider if we will be able to finally all meet
together in the autumn in Brussels for our first
democracy themed networking event.

the world starts to change again!
