IFLA: ΝΕΟΣ ΙΣΤΟΤΟΠΟΣ - ΝΕΕΣ ΛΕΙΤΟΥΡΓΙΕΣ - ΝΕΕΣ ΔΡΑΣΕΙΣ!!

 IFLA's new website is now live! Reflecting our new structures, and with strong attention both to ease of navigation and accessibility, it provides a new key reference point for the global library field.

 

With such a wide range of professional units and other volunteer groups – together with our Headquarters – constantly working to exchange ideas and produce tools to benefit the field, IFLA's website has long established itself as a rich source of knowledge and insights.

 

Bringing it up to date, and so making it as easy as possible for as many of our field as possible to benefit from our content was therefore a key part of IFLA's Strategy 2019-2024.

After many months of intensive work, we are therefore now proud to share the results – the new ifla.org website!

 

A new home for the sector

The new site offers a cleaner and fresher welcome, placing IFLA's vision and mission front and centre. It is also far easier to access the pages of IFLA's different Sections, Divisions and other committees where the work of IFLA's volunteers is set out.

 

With a view to making it easier for visitors new to IFLA to understand what we are about, information about how we work has been updated and made easier to explore,

Accompanying this improved layout is a dedicated repository for digital objects, with over 1200 objects so far, in compliance with Dublin Core metadata standards.

 

A collaborative effort

Building a site that provides easy access to the wealth of materials produced and shared through IFLA in a clear and attractive way has been a complex task.

 

To complete it successfully, close collaboration between IFLA's volunteers and Headquarters team has been essential, both in ensuring that visitors can easily gain an overview of what IFLA's 60+ different committees do, but also in carrying out user testing.

 

Particular mention goes to our Section on Libraries serving persons with Print Disabilities, who helped to make all new and curated content on the site compatible with international standards for accessibility.

 

Coming up...

Yet this is only the first phase. In the coming months, we will be expanding the range of content available in all IFLA official languages.

 

We will also continuously be adding new content to the repository, including by integrating the existing IFLA Library which holds papers and posters presented at World Library and Information Congresses since 2013.

 

While not all elements of our previous website will appear on our new one, we will soon be making available a fully archived version of the past IFLA.org.

 

Finally, we are looking forward to launching the first IFLA Newsletter by the end of September. You will need to sign up to receive this, and receive an easy overview of our Federation's work directly to your inbox, every month. We encourage you share this email with your staff or members so they can do the same.

Libraries matter for Europe – they are key venues for learning and civic engagement, windows for all to culture and heritage, and drivers of research and innovation.

And in turn, Europe matters for libraries.
To be able to build stronger, smarter and fairer societies, our institutions depend on the decisions taken in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg. We are looking for a Europe that helps us achieve our mission.

That is why we, organisations representing libraries across Europe, encourage you to read and support this manifesto.

WE WANT A EUROPE THAT

Guarantees that everyone, at any time in their lives, is able to learn, read, and develop through libraries

Europe should deliver an information promise – everyone should be able to access the information they need to improve their lives. Equity across Europe is key. To achieve this, it should help realise the potential of libraries to ensure that everyone has access to initiatives and projects that promote reading, literacy and learning for all, and develop appropriate metrics.

Legislative frameworks, funding programmes and associated regulations should be designed in a way that facilitates the participation of libraries, notably in developing digital skills and media and information literacy. Europe should strengthen libraries’ impact through education and training programmes that build capacity.

Places access at the heart of its action on culture, science and innovation

Europe should be a world leader in promoting open science. It should deliver on the promise to make all publicly funded research publications open access by 2020, and use its resources to promote the necessary systemic change to make openness the default for science and innovation, allowing libraries to fulfil their missions.

Europe should ensure that its programmes deliver access for all, in particular to literary works, notably through supporting libraries, as the guardians of Europe’s documentary heritage, to digitalise and share their collections. It should ensure implementation of relevant legislation – in particular the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market, as well as the Orphan Works Directive and provisions implementing the Marrakesh Treaty – in a way which supports these goals.

Commits fully to delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals and promotes access to information in its accession and development initiatives

Europe should deliver a comprehensive plan for inclusive sustainable development at the regional level, recognising the importance of access to information, including through libraries, as a social investment and an essential factor for success. It should engage strongly at the United Nations in support of the SDGs, and urge others to commit meaningfully.

EU accession and development funding should promote access to information and skills through enabling libraries to deliver on their potential. In order to support the conditions for growth and access to information beyond its own members, the EU should take a more constructive position in discussions at the World Intellectual Property Organisation on global limitations and exceptions to copyright.

Η Παγκόσμια Ομοσπονδία Βιβλιοθηκών και Βιβλιοθηκονομικών Ενώσεων (IFLA) κάνει μια τεράστια προσπάθεια για διατυπώσει το Παγκόσμιο Όραμα (Global Vision), έναν οδικό χάρτη για τις βιβλιοθήκες του 21^ου αιώνα!

Η Κύπρος κλήθηκε και αυτή, μέσω της ΚΕΒΕΠ, να συμμετάσχει σε αυτή την παγκόσμια πολύ σημαντική προσπάθεια! Την περασμένη βδομάδα, διοργανώθηκε με πολλή επιτυχία το τοπικό εργαστήριο Global Vision με εκπροσώπους από όλα τα είδη βιβλιοθηκών, και τώρα όλοι εμείς, ως άτομα / επαγγελματίες, καλούμαστε να εκφέρουμε τη δική μας γνώμη, μέχρι τις 30 Σεπτεμβρίου!

Policy and Research Officer

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) is looking for a new Policy and Research Officer to work on Internet governance and digital issues.

The Internet plays an indispensable role in achieving key library objectives – access to information, freedom of expression, individual empowerment. But for it to do so, risks must be managed. The open architecture of the Internet is challenged by both public and private actors. Individuals face threats to their privacy from companies and governments.

Στη μνήμη του Erland Kolding Nielsen

Η ΚΕΒΕΠ εκφράζει βαθύτατη θλίψη για τον θάνατο του Erland Kolding Nielsen, Διευθυντή της Βασιλικής Βιβλιοθήκης της Δανίας (Royal Danish Library) από το 1986.  Αν και ιστορικός αρχικά, υπήρξε θερμός υποστηρικτής και συνέβαλε σημαντικά στο έργο των βιβλιοθηκών κατά τη διάρκεια της επαγγελματικής του ζωής.

Ενδεικτικά να αναφέρουμε ότι εργάστηκε ως διευθυντικό στέλεχος σε διάφορους εθνικούς και διεθνείς οργανισμούς (IFLA, LIBER, ECPA, Danish Research Library Association, Joint Advisory Board for Danish Libraries, κ.ά.) και ως μέλος σε Επιτροπές Εμπειρογνωμόνων, σε κριτικές επιτροπές για διαγωνισμούς κτηρίων βιβλιοθηκών, σε επιτροπές αξιολόγησης για διορισμό βιβλιοθηκονόμων και πολλά άλλα.

More and more, libraries and their associations are embracing the (digital) information world. Providing access services online, delivering documents and articles electronically within their countries and cross border, digitizing public domain and copyright materials, facilitating text and data mining activities and hosting user data and catalogues in “clouds” outside their own jurisdiction, they can find themselves in a multifaceted, globalized and often challenging legal environment.

This Satellite Conference provides an overview on topical access to and use of information issues facing libraries. Discussions in Strasbourg are intended to strengthen a librarian´s knowledge and position as an invaluable vehicle for providing public access to information.
